Travelling with babies: Mother-approved family-friendly vacations

Few new mums are in a huge hurry to travel widely; after all, it can be challenging enough packing the right gear for a trip with baby to the shops and back. Eventually, though, everyone gets itchy feet. Here are some of the family-friendly travel spots chosen by Expat Living’s lovely panel of mums.

Stunning seaside landscapes in Koh Samui

Koh Samui, Thailand
‘We just went on our first family vacation with Aria a couple weeks ago to Koh Samui, Thailand! I highly recommend it, as it’s just a short flight away. We stayed at the W, which is beautiful but also very convenient. The hotel provided us with a cot and baby bath, minimising the number of things we had to bring. Food was great, as was the scenery – very easy to relax and enjoy family time without having to leave the hotel!’

Batu Batu, Malaysia
‘Batu Batu off the coast of Malaysia is fantastic for babies and kids. We also hired a campervan in Margaret River, Western Australia, when Annabelle was eight months old. It was a brilliant trip: all the baby gear comes with you everywhere in the van so there’s no packing stress, the vineyards are generally baby-friendly and there are loads of open farms and beaches for kids.’ – Daisy

For peace and quiet, head to Ubud in Bali

Bali, Indonesia
‘We went to Ubud in Bali when Alice was four months old. I highly recommend it as it’s just a short flight away and very convenient for the first trial of travelling with a baby. Ubud is nice and quiet, so you can really enjoy carrying baby around.’

Looking along the fortress walls, with the mosque and iconic lighthouse overlooking the sea

Sri Lanka
‘We went to Sri Lanka and rented a private villa. It was an amazing holiday right on the beach. We had a chef, housekeeper and nanny, so all we had to do each day was get dressed. Having a villa was also nice because when Grace needed to nap she was in her crib and we were able to have lunch or take a swim and have some free time. We arranged a bike tour through Idle Bikes, went to the Turtle Sanctuary and spent some time at the Fort in Galle.’

France
‘We travelled to France when my son was 10 months old. We covered a few cities and decided to stay in apartments rented through Airbnb, since there’s so much you need with kids – laundry, kitchenette, and so on. It was one of the best experiences ever.’

Kids will have a splashing good time at Vinpearl Waterpark

Nha Trang, Vietnam
‘There’s a crazy place called Vinpearl in Nha Trang, Vietnam. It’s actually an island in itself, with a hotel that is purpose-built to accommodate families with children. The island has its own underwater world, amusement park, indoor play gym, water-park and Southeast Asia’s biggest swimming pool, plus a cable car to and from the island. There’s a beach too. The room fee looks quite high, however, you get the room, and full or half board (with great food), and access to all the attractions on the island for free! You can use the facilities as much as you want from the minute they open to the time they close. There isn’t much entertainment for adults at night but that’s okay because it’s a family holiday.’

Langkawi, Malaysia
‘We love Langkawi for an easy location travelling with kids; it’s a quick flight and a very quick commute when you arrive. The Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa is a great location on Cenang Beach with a fabulous pool and water-play area to keep kids entertained. Perfect spot for cocktails, too, with delicious food and sunset views as the kids play in the sand.’
