Hair comes the sun: 3 treatments to get you ready for summer

Hong Kong summers play havoc with hair, so we spoke with the team at Jean Louis David salon in Central about three treatments that can give a fresh look and protect your hair’s health at the same time.

1 Sunlight Treatment

Having dark hair doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the fun of having balayage-style highlights, with Jean Louis David offering a treatment that can create the effect of sun-kissed locks for people with light brown or brunette tresses. The salon’s Sunlight Treatment is a permanent, partial lightening technique that creates luminous highlights for people with average to dark bases. If you’re a brunette, the treatment will give you brown, auburn or mahogany highlights. If you have light-brown locks, it will create copper nuances. The technique focuses on hair that frames the face and the tips. The stylist selects a few strands and makes them one to three tones lighter, to recreate the natural effects of the sun. The roots are left for contrast and to keep a more discreet, natural finish, which also means you don’t get the obvious signs of regrowth.

2 Super Smooth Keratin Treatment

If your hair is lacking lustre and shine, it could well be due to a lack of keratin. Keratin is a fibrous protein found naturally in hair, which acts as a protective shield against humidity. Exposure to the sun, poor lifestyle habits and chemicals can cause a loss of keratin, leading to split ends and a fragile, frizzy mane – which, as we all know, becomes pronounced when Hong Kong’s summer humidity sets in. Jean Louis David’s keratin treatment aims to replace your the lost protein to give smoother, shinier and stronger hair, meaning you’re far less likely to suffer the dreaded frizz. The treatment begins with a cleansing shampoo, followed by the application of a keratin-laden deep repair mask, which is left on for a few minutes to penetrate the hair’s inner fibres. Next, an intense hydration mask is applied to work on the outer fibres, smoothing the cuticles and locking the product, before the hair is blow-dried to set the keratin.

3 Organic 23

Your hair may well look good enough to eat with this innovative Organic 23 treatment made from fruits and natural ingredients, and exclusive to Jean Louis David’s Hong Kong salon. The hypoallergenic colouring formula was created by the salon’s head stylist, Alfio Faro, in response to the need for a product for clients with sensitive and irritable scalps. The Organic 23 treatment is environmentally friendly and, as an antidote to hair dyes that use a lot of chemicals causing damage to hair and scalp, free from ammonia and peroxide. The use of ammonia- and peroxide-free coloured pigments gives the hair a natural colour without damaging the structure of its fibres or causing scalp irritation. Vanilla is used, for example, on blondes, while chocolate is recommended for brunettes. Alfio says the formula is perfect for people with sensitive scalps who want to colour their tresses. “This is a nourishing treatment that gives volume and vigour to the hair and protects it from daily stress.”
