Cultural tourism in Thailand: Chiang Mai’s Muay Thai, cooking and more

Travelling is all about experiencing new things and learning about new cultures, right? Well, a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand could take the learning experience to a new level.

As a university town, Chiang Mai is the staple of Thailand’s vacation learning scene. For sporty types, why not try Muay Thai at Lanna Muay Thai Boxing Camp, a place famous for having trained the title-winning boxer, Parinya Kiatbusaba.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to sweat through your holiday, head to the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School and participate in a masterclass with a northern Thai menu, run by TV chef, Sompon Nabnian. It’s one of the first cooking schools in Chiang Mai that hold their classes in a rural setting, giving you a radically different scenic learning experience.

Another great option is to find your inner peace at the International Buddhism Centre, where you can opt for a meditation retreat on the temple grounds of Doi Suthep.

Or perhaps, learn jàp sên (literally ‘nerve touch’) in a Thai massage course at Lek Chaiya, where you can pick up the northern Thai massage technique akin to acupressure.

Be adventurous and inquisitive for once, you know that you’re never too old to learn.
